DEPORTATION LIST updated 19/03/2022
JEWS OF THE SOMME DEPORTED TO DEATH CAMPS
All are associated specifically with AMIENS unless followed in parentheses with the name of another locale in the Department of the Somme, such as ABBEVILLE, PIERREPONT-SUR-AVRE, QUEVAUVILLERS, BOUQUEMAISON, ROSIERES-EN-SANTERRE, MERS-LES-BAINS, CAYEUX-SUR-MER, AULT, ONIVAL,or the CAMP DE DOULLENS.
One objective in creating a chronological rather than an alphabetical or geographical list was to emphasize that the number of individuals with associations to the Somme deported in the year 1942 was fully as large if not larger than the number deported in 1944, year of the infamous rafle of January 4-8. Many of the individuals deported in 1942 (and some in 1943 and 1944 also) were arrested in Paris or other places. Collective memory and annual commemorations should ideally take account all of the Jews who lived or came under the theoretical responsibility of the occupation authorities, German or French. In that spirit, I have also included in the list and identified as such a small number of Jews originally from Eastern and Central Europe who moved to Belgium and then with the German advance, went over into Northern France. Arrested in Lille or Roubaix, if not in Antwerp, they were interned in the Camp of Doullens which was under the administration of the Prefect of the Somme. Six of them were identified as targets for transfer to the East on the instructions to the Prefect concerning the rafle of foreign and stateless Jews in July 1942. While only “of the Somme” insofar as they were interned in a camp within the Department, I felt it was necessary to include them as they came under the responsibility of the French civil administration. I am not sure if many persons are aware of the functioning of the Camp of Doullens within the Department and that some Jews, interned there, were subsequently transported to Drancy before being deported to Auschwitz?
